Less Can Be More

A few weeks ago, I found a small sketch
of a beach cottage I did last summer,
And decided to use it as a reference
for an oil painting.

Here’s the simple sketch that I used as a reference.

Using a simple value study (as opposed to a photo)
as a reference forces you to make things up and get back to the basics;
simple shapes, limited values, and color harmony.
